Tannic acid is a tannin obtained from gallnut. It is a yellow or light brown light amorphous powder or scale; odorless, slightly special smell, and extremely astringent. It is soluble in water and ethanol, and easily soluble in glycerol. Its aqueous solution turns blue-black when it meets iron salt solution, and adding sodium sulfite can delay the discoloration. In industry, tannic acid is widely used in tanning and making blue ink. Tannic acid can coagulate protein. People use tannic acid to chemically treat raw pig skin and raw cow skin, which can coagulate the soluble protein in the raw skin. As a result, the raw skin that would stink and rot after a few days becomes beautiful, clean, flexible and durable leather. This leather making process is called leather tanning.
Tannic acid is a light yellow to light brown amorphous powder or loose, shiny scaly or spongy solid, which can turn black when exposed to air. It is odorless, slightly special smell, has a strong astringent taste, and darkens in color when exposed to light and air.
